Indonesia Presses Platforms on Child Safety After TikTok Disables 780,000 Underage Accounts

Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) says early enforcement of new child protection rules for digital platforms is beginning to show results. As of 10 April 2026, TikTok has disabled around 780,000 accounts belonging to users under the age of 16 in Indonesia. The move forms part of the implementation of Government Regulation No 17 of 2025 on Electronic System Governance for Child Protection (PP TUNAS), which requires platforms to strengthen safeguards for minors online.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, TikTok is the first platform to report concrete action under the regulation by removing underage accounts and updating its policies to reflect the new age requirements.

TikTok Reports Account Closures Under New Regulation

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid said the platform’s action marks an initial step in implementing the government’s approach to protecting children in digital spaces. The regulation requires electronic system operators to ensure stronger safeguards for younger users, including age restrictions and improved monitoring.

“Kami mencatat TikTok menjadi platform pertama yang melaporkan bahwa per tanggal 10 April 2026, telah menonaktifkan 780 ribu akun anak di bawah 16 tahun untuk Indonesia” — Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs

The ministry said TikTok has also submitted a formal letter of compliance to the Indonesian government and published a minimum age requirement of 16 through its Help Center. The company has committed to providing regular updates on its implementation of the regulation.

Meutya described the development as an encouraging early outcome for public oversight of digital platforms.

“Kita harapkan juga muncul dari platform lainnya untuk segera menyampaikan jumlah akun yang sudah dilakukan penanganan atau takedown” — Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs

Government Flags Remaining Gaps in Other Platforms

While acknowledging progress from TikTok, the ministry said other platforms have yet to demonstrate full compliance with PP TUNAS. Officials pointed in particular to the gaming platform Roblox, which has introduced global changes to its safety settings and launched new features through its United States headquarters.

However, Kemkomdigi said the adjustments still leave gaps that could expose children to risk. According to the ministry, the platform still allows communication or chat interactions with unknown users, which conflicts with the requirements of Indonesia’s child protection regulation.

As a result, the government has not accepted Roblox’s proposal to be recognised as compliant with PP TUNAS.

“Masih ada loophole (celah) yang membolehkan komunikasi atau chat dengan orang tak dikenal” — Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs

The ministry stressed that compliance with the regulation is mandatory for all electronic system operators operating in Indonesia. Authorities said they will continue monitoring platforms and conducting periodic evaluations, and may take further action if services fail to meet the regulatory requirements.
