Queensland Begins Construction of Triple Zero Operations Centre in Cairns

Uncategorized

Construction has begun on a new A$31.9 million Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Triple Zero (000) Operations Centre and Regional Office in Cairns, aimed at strengthening emergency response capability across Far North Queensland. The purpose-built facility will support emergency call handling and medical dispatch operations in a region that experiences high demand for urgent health services. According to the official government announcement, the centre is intended to provide modern infrastructure and greater operational capacity for teams responding to emergency calls.

The project is designed to expand the capacity of QAS operations in the region by accommodating additional Emergency Call Takers and Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs). These personnel play a critical role in coordinating emergency responses and guiding callers through urgent medical situations before paramedics arrive.

Strengthening Emergency Call Handling Capacity

In the 2024–25 financial year, QAS staff answered more than 1.2 million Triple Zero calls from across Queensland. The new Cairns operations centre aims to help manage this demand by providing purpose-built facilities for call handling and dispatch functions, with room to scale operations in future.

The facility will initially include 12 dedicated workstations for operations staff. It has also been designed with capacity for expansion as call volumes and service needs grow. The investment reflects broader efforts to modernise emergency response infrastructure, complementing initiatives such as smart drone trials supporting next-generation emergency response across Australia.

Infrastructure Designed for Extreme Weather Resilience

Given the region’s exposure to severe weather events, the new centre incorporates flood and stormwater protection measures. Buildings, parking areas, and associated infrastructure have been designed to maintain operational continuity during extreme weather, helping ensure emergency services remain available when communities most need assistance.

Modernised infrastructure also supports the operational environment for dispatch teams who provide continuous support to the public. These teams deliver medical guidance and reassurance to callers while coordinating ambulance responses across large and often remote areas of Far North Queensland.

Part of a Broader Health System Investment

The operations centre forms part of wider efforts to improve healthcare access and emergency response capability in the region. The programme includes the Cairns Hospital Master Plan and upgrades aimed at improving patient flow, such as an expanded transit lounge.

Authorities are also investing in workforce and service delivery improvements, including expanded elective surgery capacity and the introduction of a new paramedic role intended to support healthcare in some of the most remote Far North communities.

Future Development of Cairns Ambulance Facilities

Once the operations centre and regional office are completed, a second stage of the project will focus on redeveloping the Cairns Ambulance Station. Together, the upgrades are expected to strengthen the region’s emergency medical infrastructure and support frontline teams responsible for responding to urgent incidents.

Across Australia, governments are increasingly combining infrastructure investment with emerging technologies to improve response times and coordination, as seen in initiatives such as Victoria’s broader strategy to expand the use of artificial intelligence in public services.
