New Telecommunications Towers Improve Rural Connectivity in Melaka’s Asahan Constituency

Uncategorized

Telecommunications coverage gaps in rural parts of the Asahan state constituency in Melaka have been addressed through the construction of 13 new telecommunications towers over the past three years. The infrastructure rollout is intended to improve broadband access and enable residents to participate more fully in digital services and economic opportunities. According to a Bernama report, local leaders say reliable connectivity is essential to supporting community development and strengthening digital inclusion in rural areas.

The initiative reflects wider national efforts to expand digital infrastructure and ensure equitable connectivity across Malaysia, particularly in underserved communities. Similar programmes have been implemented elsewhere in the country, including initiatives highlighted in Malaysia’s national broadband and 5G readiness plans aimed at strengthening the country’s digital foundation.

Asahan assemblyman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan said addressing broadband access challenges is central to the constituency’s vision of becoming a Kampung Sejahtera, or prosperous village community. Improved connectivity is expected to support residents’ access to digital tools, services, and information.

“Reliable telecommunications infrastructure is essential, as community well-being cannot be achieved if the people are unable to utilise technology,” — Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, Asahan Assemblyman

Fairul Nizam also welcomed the Melaka state government’s plan to develop Asahan as a Kampung Sejahtera, noting the constituency’s diverse population that includes Malays, Chinese, Indians and the Orang Asli community. Ensuring equitable connectivity across these communities is considered an important step towards inclusive development.

Community Engagement Through State Programme

The announcement was made during the launch of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme and the Melaka Sayang Rakyat Aidilfitri celebration for the Asahan constituency at Sekolah Kebangsaan Felda Bukit Senggeh. The event was officiated by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

A total of 115 programmes have been planned as part of the WRUR initiative, involving multiple government departments and agencies working directly with the local community. The programme also includes participation from more than 500 Orang Asli residents through 10 dedicated initiatives.

Expanding telecommunications coverage in rural areas is widely viewed as a foundation for broader digital transformation efforts. Previous connectivity projects across Malaysia, including programmes aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure in Sabah, have similarly focused on bridging service gaps between urban and rural communities.
