India Updates Measures To Maintain Energy Supply And Support Citizens Amid West Asia Developments

Uncategorized

The Government of India has issued an operational update outlining measures to maintain energy supplies, safeguard maritime operations and assist Indian citizens in West Asia amid ongoing regional developments. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, authorities are closely monitoring supply chains and transport networks while coordinating with states and ministries to maintain stability. Details of the response were outlined in an official government briefing, covering fuel availability, enforcement actions and support for Indians returning from the region.

Energy Supply Measures Across India

Following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the government has implemented several measures to maintain uninterrupted access to petroleum products and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Refineries across India are operating at full capacity and authorities report that adequate stocks of crude oil, petrol and diesel remain available.

Domestic production of LPG from refineries has been increased to support household demand. Officials stated that fuel retail outlets across the country continue to operate normally, although some areas reported unusually high sales following rumours of potential shortages. The government has urged citizens not to engage in panic buying and to rely only on verified information.

Natural Gas Supply Prioritised For Households And Transport

Priority has been given to domestic piped natural gas (PNG) users and compressed natural gas (CNG) for transport. Industrial and commercial users connected to the gas grid are currently receiving supplies equivalent to around 80% of their average consumption.

The government has also encouraged city gas distribution entities to expand PNG connections for restaurants, hotels and institutional kitchens in order to reduce reliance on commercial LPG. Companies including Indraprastha Gas Limited, Mahanagar Gas Limited, GAIL Gas and Bharat Petroleum have introduced incentives to accelerate adoption.

To support expansion, authorities have urged states and union territories to accelerate approvals for gas infrastructure projects. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation has advised its regional offices to process city gas distribution applications within ten days of receipt.

In addition, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has directed gas distribution entities to connect facilities such as residential schools, hostels, community kitchens and anganwadi kitchens to PNG within five days where pipelines are already available nearby.

Pipeline Expansion And Regulatory Changes

A new regulatory framework issued under the Essential Commodities Act seeks to streamline the development of natural gas pipeline infrastructure nationwide. The Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026 aims to accelerate pipeline construction and expansion while addressing delays related to approvals and land access.

The initiative is intended to strengthen last‑mile connectivity and support the broader transition to cleaner fuels, reinforcing national energy security. These measures align with wider policy efforts to modernise infrastructure and logistics systems, including initiatives highlighted in India’s push for data‑driven trade and logistics planning.

LPG, Kerosene And Alternative Fuel Measures

Authorities reported that domestic LPG distribution remains stable, with no shortages reported by distributors. Deliveries of household cylinders are continuing as normal.

Commercial LPG supply has been partially restored and expanded through additional allocations to states and union territories. Government approval has increased the allocation of commercial LPG to 50% of normal levels, prioritising sectors such as restaurants, roadside eateries, hotels, industrial canteens, food processing units, subsidised community kitchens and migrant workers.

More than 37,000 small 5 kg cylinders were sold in a single day as part of efforts to support migrant labour and smaller establishments. Since 14 March 2026, approximately 25,922 metric tonnes of LPG have been supplied to commercial establishments across participating states and territories.

The government has also allocated an additional 48,000 kilolitres of kerosene to states and union territories beyond their regular quotas. Authorities have been asked to identify distribution points at the district level to ensure effective delivery.

To further reduce pressure on LPG demand, alternative fuel options such as kerosene, coal and electric cooking technologies are being promoted. The Ministry of Coal has directed Coal India and Singareni Collieries to increase allocations to states for small and medium consumers. Data‑driven management tools are increasingly used to oversee such supply networks, similar to those described in India’s digital coal supply chain monitoring initiatives.

State Governments Asked To Strengthen Enforcement

Under the Essential Commodities Act, state governments are responsible for monitoring the supply of essential fuels and taking action against hoarding and black marketing. The central government has urged states and union territories to intensify enforcement and maintain transparent public communication.

Officials have recommended daily press briefings, dedicated control rooms, active monitoring of misinformation on social media and coordinated inspection campaigns with oil marketing companies.

Enforcement operations have already intensified. On 25 March 2026 alone, more than 2,600 raids were conducted across states including Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana, resulting in the seizure of more than 450 LPG cylinders. Over 680 first information reports have been registered and 195 individuals arrested in connection with hoarding or illegal sales.

Maritime Operations And Seafarer Safety

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is monitoring shipping activity and maritime trade routes while coordinating with the Directorate General of Shipping to ensure the safety of Indian seafarers. Authorities report that all Indian seafarers currently operating in the region are safe.

Twenty Indian‑flagged vessels carrying around 540 Indian seafarers are presently operating in the western Persian Gulf. A 24‑hour control room established by the Directorate General of Shipping has handled more than 4,200 calls and over 8,200 emails since activation, assisting with safety monitoring and logistical coordination.

The directorate has facilitated the safe return of more than 674 Indian seafarers so far. Meanwhile, port operations across India continue normally, with state maritime boards in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry reporting no congestion.

Support For Indian Citizens In West Asia

The Ministry of External Affairs is coordinating closely with Indian embassies and consulates across the Gulf and West Asia to support citizens in the region. Diplomatic missions are operating around the clock, issuing advisories and assisting with consular services for students, seafarers, visitors and other Indian nationals.

Air operations are gradually improving as additional flights are introduced. Since 28 February 2026, approximately 450,000 passengers have returned to India from the region. Flights continue from Saudi Arabia and Oman, while limited non‑scheduled flights are operating from the United Arab Emirates. Alternative travel routes are also being facilitated through neighbouring countries where airspace restrictions apply.

The government has reiterated that ensuring the safety and welfare of Indian citizens abroad remains a priority while it continues monitoring developments and coordinating with states and relevant agencies to maintain supply stability at home. These efforts form part of broader governance and digital coordination reforms supporting economic resilience and public service delivery, as explored in India’s wider digital governance transformation.
