India Reviews Progress Of Indigenous Kavach Rail Safety System

Uncategorized

India’s Ministry of Railways has reviewed progress on the nationwide deployment of Kavach, the country’s indigenously developed automatic train protection system designed to improve operational safety and efficiency. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assessed implementation progress and the use of advanced technologies supporting the system’s rollout. Kavach integrates braking automation, communications infrastructure, and monitoring platforms to reduce the risk of collisions and enhance real-time oversight across busy rail corridors.

According to an official government statement on the review of Kavach implementation, the meeting focused on accelerating deployment while integrating newer digital capabilities to support safer and more efficient train operations. The system forms part of India’s broader effort to apply emerging technologies across public infrastructure, reflecting trends seen in initiatives where AI and digital technologies are transforming rail travel in India.

Technological Enhancements Supporting Kavach

Indian Railways has introduced several upgrades to strengthen the system’s technical capabilities. A key development is the Universal Braking System (UBA), which standardises braking curves across equipment from different manufacturers. This improves interoperability and reduces the need for repeated testing during deployment.

Additional improvements include updated baseline software, AI-enabled design automation, and integration interfaces linking locomotives, interlocking systems, and trackside equipment. These upgrades are intended to improve reliability while enabling smoother integration across complex railway infrastructure.

An AI-based centralised monitoring platform known as Suraksha is also under development. The system will function as an integrated operations management platform, providing real-time deployment monitoring and predictive maintenance capabilities. By alerting traffic controllers to unusual events, it aims to support quicker operational responses and strengthen safety oversight. Similar applications of artificial intelligence are already being deployed in other sectors, such as projects where AI and GIS visualisation tools are improving dam safety monitoring.

Current Deployment Across the Rail Network

Kavach has currently been installed across 3,103 kilometres of railway routes. Installation work is ongoing on an additional 24,427 kilometres, including several high-density and high-traffic corridors.

Under the implementation of Kavach version 4.0, the system is already operational along 1,638 kilometres of major routes, including sections of the Delhi–Mumbai and Delhi–Howrah corridors. More recently, the technology was activated along a 190-kilometre stretch between Prayagraj and Kanpur on the Delhi–Howrah high-density corridor.

Deployment also involves extensive telecommunications and trackside infrastructure. Optical fibre cables have been laid along 8,921 kilometres of track, supported by 1,183 telecommunications towers and Kavach data centre installations across 767 railway stations. Trackside equipment installation is currently underway on 7,100 kilometres of routes.

The onboard system has already been installed on 4,277 locomotives, while work continues on another 8,979 engines as part of the wider rollout.

Planned Expansion Over the Next Two Years

Installing Kavach involves complex coordination between signalling systems, trackside hardware, telecommunications networks, and locomotive equipment. To accelerate adoption, Indian Railways plans to expand the system across 9,000 kilometres of rail routes over the next two years.

Following this phase, the network is expected to grow at a pace of up to 10,000 kilometres per year. The expansion is intended to support safer operations across increasingly busy corridors while strengthening the digital backbone of India’s rail network.
