India Reviews Fuel Supply, Maritime Safety and Citizen Support Amid West Asia Tensions

Uncategorized

The Government of India has outlined a series of measures to maintain energy supplies, protect maritime operations and support Indian citizens in West Asia as geopolitical tensions affect regional transport routes. According to an official update released on 3 April 2026, authorities are monitoring fuel availability, shipping movements and travel conditions while coordinating with state governments and diplomatic missions. The government has also urged citizens to avoid panic buying of fuel and to rely only on verified information from official sources.

The update, published by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, details how the government is responding to supply risks linked to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional instability. The full advisory is available through the official government release. Authorities emphasised that petrol, diesel and LPG stocks remain adequate nationwide, while refiners and distribution systems are operating normally.

Government Advises Public to Avoid Panic Fuel Purchases

The government has asked citizens not to engage in panic buying of petrol, diesel or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Officials reported that rumours circulating in some regions have led to temporary spikes in retail demand, causing congestion at fuel stations despite sufficient national supply.

Consumers are encouraged to book LPG cylinders using digital platforms rather than visiting distributors in person unless necessary. Authorities have also promoted the use of alternative cooking options, including piped natural gas (PNG), induction stoves and electric cooktops, as part of broader energy conservation efforts.

Fuel Supply Management and Priority Allocation

Despite the challenging geopolitical environment, the government has prioritised domestic LPG and PNG supply, with hospitals and educational institutions receiving high priority allocations. Oil refineries are operating at full capacity and increasing LPG production to meet domestic demand.

Measures introduced to balance supply and demand include extending LPG booking intervals, prioritising distribution in high‑need areas and increasing the availability of alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal. The coal allocation strategy aligns with wider government efforts to strengthen energy distribution systems, including digital monitoring initiatives such as the smart dashboard designed to improve oversight of India’s coal supply chain.

State governments have been instructed to prioritise LPG distribution for households and essential services, while maintaining vigilance against hoarding, black marketing and misinformation.

Enforcement Actions Against Hoarding and Market Manipulation

Authorities across states and union territories have intensified enforcement actions under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and the LPG Control Order, 2000. More than 4,000 inspections have been conducted to prevent hoarding and illegal trading of LPG cylinders, with over 1,300 cylinders seized during recent operations.

Public sector oil marketing companies have also strengthened inspection procedures and issued more than 670 show‑cause notices to LPG distributors suspected of irregularities.

Expanding PNG Infrastructure and Alternative Energy Access

The government is accelerating the expansion of city gas distribution networks to reduce pressure on LPG supply and support the transition towards cleaner fuels. Policy measures include faster approvals for pipeline infrastructure, temporary regulatory relaxations and coordination with state authorities to expedite right‑of‑way clearances.

Since March 2026, more than 342,000 new PNG connections have been activated and over 370,000 additional customers have registered for new connections. In the past week alone, more than 75,000 connections were gasified across 110 gas distribution areas.

Efforts to expand gas infrastructure complement wider national strategies to modernise supply chains and industrial logistics, including initiatives supporting data‑driven logistics and trade planning through the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation.

Retail Fuel Availability and Price Measures

Retail fuel stations across India remain fully operational, and authorities confirmed that petrol and diesel supplies are stable. While international crude prices have risen due to the Middle East crisis, the government has reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by INR 10 per litre to limit the impact on consumers.

To safeguard domestic supply, export duties of INR 21.5 per litre on diesel and INR 29.5 per litre on aviation turbine fuel have also been imposed.

Maritime Operations and Seafarer Safety

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is closely monitoring maritime activity and the safety of Indian seafarers in the region. Eighteen Indian‑flagged vessels currently operating in the western Persian Gulf carry 485 Indian crew members.

The Directorate General of Shipping’s 24‑hour control room has handled nearly 5,000 calls and more than 10,000 emails since activation. Authorities have facilitated the safe return of more than 1,130 Indian seafarers so far, including 155 repatriated within the previous 24 hours.

Domestic port operations remain normal, with maritime boards in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry confirming that no congestion has been reported.

Support for Indian Citizens and Travellers in West Asia

India’s Ministry of External Affairs continues to coordinate closely with embassies and consulates across the Gulf and West Asia. Diplomatic missions are operating round‑the‑clock helplines and providing assistance related to visas, travel routes, consular services and emergency logistics.

Where airspace restrictions remain in place, Indian citizens are being assisted through alternative transit routes, including neighbouring countries. Since 28 February 2026, approximately 649,000 passengers have travelled from the region to India as flight operations gradually resume.

Authorities stated that ensuring the safety and welfare of the large Indian diaspora across the region remains a top priority while the government continues to monitor developments closely.
