India Approves Road Over Bridge Project to Improve Connectivity at Deendayal Port

Uncategorized

The Government of India has approved the construction of a road over bridge at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, aimed at easing congestion and improving cargo evacuation. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹132.51 crore, forms part of the national Sagarmala programme and aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan to strengthen multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency. Details of the approval were published in an official government release.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways approved the construction of the road over bridge at LC‑235 within the Deendayal Port Authority area. The project is designed to remove a key logistical bottleneck by allowing uninterrupted movement across an existing railway crossing.

Once completed, the bridge is expected to enable smoother cargo movement to and from the port, reduce traffic delays and strengthen operational efficiency. The construction is currently being carried out by Western Railway on a deposit basis.

Part of broader logistics modernisation efforts

The project forms part of the government’s wider strategy to modernise transport infrastructure and improve supply chain performance across the country. Initiatives such as Sagarmala and the PM Gati Shakti framework aim to integrate ports, railways and road networks into a coordinated logistics ecosystem.

These efforts complement other national initiatives focused on data-driven trade and logistics planning, including programmes highlighted in India’s work to strengthen smart logistics and data‑driven trade systems. Improved connectivity between ports and inland transport corridors is seen as essential to reducing transit times and increasing efficiency.

Government emphasis on integrated infrastructure planning

The project proposal was reviewed by the Expanded Investment Board chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. During the review process, the revised project cost was assessed to ensure compliance with updated safety standards and technical specifications.

— Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India

The ministry has also instructed all major ports to map their infrastructure projects on the PM Gati Shakti digital platform. This is intended to improve coordination across agencies and support faster infrastructure development nationwide.

Better integration between ports, railways and digital infrastructure is increasingly seen as central to India’s logistics transformation. Developments in transport and connectivity—alongside initiatives such as technology-driven improvements in the rail sector—are helping build a more coordinated national transport system.
