ECINET Platform Enables Voters to Check Candidate Backgrounds Ahead of 2026 State Elections

Uncategorized

India’s Election Commission has introduced a digital tool that allows voters to review detailed background information about election candidates ahead of the 2026 state elections and by-elections. Through the ECINET platform’s “Know Your Candidate” (KYC) module, citizens can access verified disclosures on candidates’ criminal cases, financial assets, liabilities and educational qualifications. The initiative aims to strengthen transparency and public oversight as several states prepare for voting in April 2026.

According to an official announcement from the Election Commission of India, the election schedule was announced on 15 March 2026 for legislative assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. By-elections will also take place in eight constituencies across Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland and Tripura.

Election Timeline and Candidate Participation

For the assemblies of Assam and Kerala and the union territory of Puducherry, along with by-elections in four states, a total of 1,955 candidates are contesting. Polling for these elections is scheduled for 9 April 2026.

The nomination process has also begun for the Tamil Nadu assembly election and the first two phases of voting in West Bengal. The final date for withdrawal of candidature is 9 April 2026 for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Phase I, while candidates contesting in West Bengal Phase II have until 13 April 2026 to withdraw.

ECINET’s ‘Know Your Candidate’ Module

Voters can use ECINET’s KYC module to review information submitted by candidates as part of their statutory election disclosures. The platform enables citizens to examine key details including criminal records, declared assets and liabilities, academic qualifications and official social media accounts.

Users can access the KYC feature through the “Election Management” tab on the ECINET platform. The system also allows the public to download the full candidate affidavit, known as Form 26, which contains the official declarations submitted during nomination.

A Unified Digital Platform for Election Services

ECINET is designed as a comprehensive electoral services platform that integrates more than 40 applications and portals operated by the Election Commission of India. By consolidating these services, the system aims to provide a single interface for accessing electoral information and services across the country’s large and complex voting system.

The platform offers a range of voter services, including voter registration, electoral roll searches, application tracking and the ability to contact election officials. Citizens can also schedule calls with Booth Level Officers, download their electronic voter identity card (e-EPIC), monitor polling trends and submit grievances through the platform.

In addition, ECINET incorporates tools that support election monitoring and accessibility. These include mechanisms for reporting violations, such as the cVIGIL system, and services designed to ensure accessible participation for persons with disabilities. The integration of these functions reflects a broader push towards digital governance and citizen-centred public services, similar to initiatives highlighted in India’s wider digital governance programmes and other platforms that scale administrative services nationwide, such as SAMPANN.

By providing accessible, real-time information about candidates and electoral processes, ECINET is intended to support informed participation and improve transparency in the conduct of elections across India.
