Inter-Ministerial Briefing Reviews West Asia Developments and India’s Energy Preparedness

Uncategorized

An inter-ministerial briefing held on 18 March 2026 reviewed the evolving situation in West Asia and its implications for India’s energy supplies, maritime operations and the safety of Indian nationals overseas. Senior officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and the Ministry of External Affairs provided updates on fuel availability, port and shipping conditions, and consular support. The briefing aimed to keep the public informed through regular, factual updates.

According to the official government briefing, authorities are closely monitoring supply chains and transport routes following disruptions in the region, including concerns linked to the Strait of Hormuz. Officials stressed that coordinated action across ministries and with state governments is intended to maintain continuity in essential services and protect national interests.

Energy supply and fuel availability

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported that all refineries are operating at full capacity with adequate crude oil stocks. Domestic production of petrol and diesel is sufficient to meet demand, with no immediate need for imports. Refinery-based domestic LPG production has increased by around 40 percent, helping to stabilise supplies.

Oil marketing companies have reported no shortages at retail outlets, and petrol and diesel supplies continue without disruption. Citizens have been advised to avoid panic buying, as fuel stocks remain adequate nationwide.

Natural gas and the shift towards PNG

Priority sectors continue to receive protected natural gas supplies, including full provision for domestic piped natural gas (PNG) households and compressed natural gas (CNG) transport. Supplies to industrial and commercial users are being regulated at around 80 percent. Commercial LPG consumers are being encouraged to switch to PNG, with authorised city gas distribution (CGD) entities offering new connections.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has directed CGD entities to shorten the time between application and commencement of gas supply and to clearly communicate timelines to consumers. Public awareness campaigns are also being promoted, reflecting a broader emphasis on digital coordination and monitoring across government systems, similar to approaches outlined in discussions on India’s national digital and technology frameworks.

To support reforms linked to the transition from LPG to PNG, the central government has offered states and union territories an additional 10 percent allocation of commercial LPG. This incentive is tied to measures such as faster approvals for CGD projects, reduced fees, and streamlined local coordination to accelerate network expansion.

LPG, kerosene and enforcement measures

LPG supply is being monitored continuously, with no reports of shortages at distributor points. Online LPG bookings have risen from 83 percent to 93 percent, while delivery authentication coverage has increased significantly to curb malpractice. Domestic LPG cylinder distribution remains normal across states.

States and union territories have also received additional kerosene allocations totalling 48,000 kilolitres, where required. Enforcement actions against hoarding and black marketing are ongoing under the Essential Commodities Act, supported by coordinated inspections and surprise checks. These compliance efforts align with wider public-sector reforms that increasingly rely on data-driven oversight, an approach also evident in initiatives discussed in responsible technology adoption across government.

Maritime security and port operations

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed that all Indian seafarers currently in the Gulf region are safe, with no recent incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels. Twenty-two Indian ships with 611 Indian crew members remain under continuous monitoring by the Directorate General of Shipping.

India’s maritime sector continues to function smoothly, with no congestion reported at ports. State maritime boards in Gujarat and Maharashtra have confirmed normal operations, while major ports such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Visakhapatnam Port Authority retain sufficient handling and storage capacity. The use of integrated monitoring systems reflects a broader trend towards digitally enabled infrastructure management, also highlighted in analysis of technology investment supporting national resilience.

Support for Indian citizens in the region

The Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that the safety and welfare of Indian nationals in West Asia remain a top priority. Indian missions across the region are operating round the clock, maintaining contact with local authorities, community organisations and affected individuals. A dedicated control room continues to coordinate assistance with state governments.

In Iran, Indian students in cities including Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz have been relocated to safer locations, with ongoing consular support. Several school board examinations, including CBSE Class X and XII, as well as ICSE and Kerala Board exams, have been cancelled, with alternative assessment arrangements to be announced by the respective boards.

Since 28 February 2026, around 260,000 passengers have returned to India from the region. Flight operations are gradually improving as additional services are introduced, although some airspace restrictions remain in place. The government has emphasised that it remains vigilant and continues to coordinate closely across ministries and agencies to respond to further developments.
