India Updates Energy Supply, Maritime Operations and Citizen Support Amid West Asia Disruptions
The Government of India has outlined a series of measures to maintain energy supplies, maritime operations and citizen support as geopolitical tensions continue across West Asia. Despite disruption to regional shipping routes, authorities say fuel availability across the country remains stable and key logistics systems are functioning normally. Updates released by the government highlight coordinated actions across ministries to manage petroleum supplies, protect maritime trade and assist Indian citizens returning from affected areas.
According to an official government update published on the Press Information Bureau, contingency measures are being implemented to ensure uninterrupted access to fuel, stabilise supply chains and support Indian nationals in the region. The response reflects broader national efforts to strengthen resilience across energy, logistics and administrative systems, complementing ongoing reforms such as India’s digital governance initiatives aimed at improving economic competitiveness.
Fuel Supplies Maintained Despite Regional Disruption
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported that all domestic refineries are operating at full capacity and that crude oil inventories remain sufficient to meet demand. Petrol and diesel stocks are considered adequate across the country, and retail fuel stations are operating normally.
To support supply stability, the government has reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by INR 10 per litre while imposing export duties of INR 21.5 per litre on diesel and INR 29.5 per litre on aviation turbine fuel. These steps are intended to prioritise domestic availability.
Authorities acknowledged reports of panic buying in some areas following misinformation circulating on social media. However, officials emphasised that petrol and diesel supplies remain sufficient nationwide and urged citizens not to rely on rumours.
Government Expands Natural Gas and PNG Access
Natural gas distribution has been prioritised for domestic consumers and transport-related compressed natural gas (CNG) supply, which continues at full levels. Industrial and commercial consumers connected to the gas grid are receiving around 80% of their average consumption.
The government is also accelerating the expansion of city gas distribution networks to promote piped natural gas (PNG) as an alternative to commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Regulatory changes and streamlined approvals aim to support faster pipeline deployment and improved last‑mile connectivity. These infrastructure initiatives align with wider efforts to modernise India’s energy logistics ecosystem, similar to developments seen in digital monitoring of the national coal supply chain.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has instructed city gas distribution companies to connect institutions such as residential schools, colleges, hostels and community kitchens to PNG within five days where pipeline infrastructure is already available.
LPG Distribution Continues With Increased Monitoring
Domestic LPG supply remains stable, with more than 5.4 million cylinders distributed in a single day. Authorities also reported a sharp increase in online cylinder bookings, rising by 91% compared with typical levels.
To reduce the risk of supply manipulation, delivery authentication through a Delivery Authentication Code has increased from 53% in February 2026 to 84%. Enforcement actions have intensified, with around 2,900 inspections conducted nationwide and more than 1,700 cylinders seized during recent raids targeting hoarding and black-market activity.
Commercial LPG allocation has gradually increased to around 70% of pre-crisis levels. Restaurants, hotels, community kitchens and selected industries with specialised heating requirements are among the sectors receiving priority supply.
States Asked to Strengthen Public Communication
Under the Essential Commodities Act 1955 and the LPG Control Order 2000, state governments have been asked to intensify monitoring of supply chains and prevent hoarding. The central government has urged states and union territories to institutionalise daily press briefings, establish helplines and actively counter misinformation circulating online.
At present, 14 states and union territories have begun issuing daily media briefings on fuel availability. Officials are also coordinating closely with oil marketing companies to conduct inspections and maintain stable distribution.
Maritime Trade and Port Operations Continue Normally
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways reported that port operations across India remain normal, with no congestion recorded. Additional cargo capacity has been allocated where necessary to ensure continuity of maritime trade.
Twenty Indian-flagged vessels are currently operating in the western Persian Gulf region, carrying around 540 Indian seafarers. Authorities are monitoring these ships in coordination with shipowners, recruitment agencies and Indian diplomatic missions.
The Directorate General of Shipping has maintained a 24‑hour control room to assist seafarers and their families. Since its establishment, the centre has handled more than 4,400 calls and nearly 8,900 emails. More than 938 Indian seafarers have been safely repatriated so far.
Support for Indian Citizens Returning From the Region
The Ministry of External Affairs is working with Indian missions across West Asia to assist citizens affected by travel disruptions. Embassies and consulates are operating round-the-clock helplines while coordinating logistics, visa support and travel arrangements for students, seafarers and other travellers.
Since 28 February 2026, nearly 497,000 passengers have returned to India from countries across the Gulf and West Asia through a combination of scheduled and special flights. Additional non-scheduled flights have been arranged from several regional airports to support returning travellers.
The government has advised citizens to rely on official information channels and avoid panic purchases of fuel or LPG. Authorities also encourage households and businesses to conserve energy and consider alternatives such as piped natural gas and electric cooking appliances where available.
